Research Experience
Domain experts bring physical system understanding who are typically trained in forward problem solutions in which analytical models are created and responses to particular inputs are predicted. An important barrier to progress in diagnostics is the lack of recognition by domain experts that inverse problems require much higher accuracy (orders of magnitude) than traditional forward problems. The desire in Intelligent Diagnostics is to characterize changes, if any, in an existing system based on measured responses. Yet, changes are always present and what is significant and related to possible damage must be separated from what is within the statistical variation for a given a set of operating conditions. Domain experts often approach diagnosis in a haphazard manner, with inadequate solutions. Inversion expertise melded with domain expertise, will open a world of opportunity to previously unsolvable diagnosis. The reference to inversion expertise includes inverse scattering, signal processing, imaging, system identification, computation, and embedded system implementation aspects.
